Intangible Cultural Heritage(非物质文化遗产):

In Chinese, it is pronounced as: fēi wù zhì wén huà yí chǎn,Written as:

In China, Intangible Cultural Heritage refers to the various traditional cultural expressions that have been passed down through generations among all ethnic groups and are considered an integral part of their cultural heritage. This also includes the physical objects and places related to these traditional cultural expressions.

Intangible Cultural Heritage stands in contrast to tangible cultural heritage, which primarily includes buildings, sculptures, paintings, calligraphy, inscriptions, archaeological sites, and other tangible, touchable cultural products. Intangible Cultural Heritage, however, focuses more on intangible, non-material cultural forms. It encompasses all aspects of human life and is a crystallization of human wisdom and creativity. This includes various oral traditions and expressions, encompassing language, music, dance, games, rituals, festivals, craftsmanship, and traditional folk medicine.

The concept and development of Intangible Cultural Heritage have historical reasons and have been evolving continuously. It could also be said that its emergence and development are necessary for the protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage, the needs of the times, and historical necessity. There have always been differences and debates among experts and scholars worldwide regarding the terminology for Intangible Cultural Heritage.

As of December 2023, China has 43 items listed in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list, ranking first in the world in terms of numbers.
