“The True and False Handsome Monkey King” is a classic episode from “Journey to the West,” which tells the story of Tang Seng and his disciples encountering the Six-Eared Macaque on their quest for scriptures. The Six-Eared Macaque, disguised as another Sun Wukong, not only injures Tang Seng but also engages in a fierce battle with the real Sun Wukong. Because of their identical appearances, voices, and martial skills, Tang Seng, Guanyin Bodhisattva, the Loong King of the Eastern Sea, the Jade Emperor, and the King of Hell are all unable to distinguish the true from the false. Ultimately, with the help of the Tathagata Buddha at Vulture Peak, the true identity is revealed, and the Six-Eared Macaque is decisively subdued, allowing the master and his disciples to continue their westward journey to acquire the scriptures.
