Red Boy, originally named Bull Holy Infant, is a character from the classic novel “Journey to the West.” He is the son of the Bull Demon King and Princess Iron Fan, known as the Great Holy Infant King.

Red Boy had practiced for three hundred years in the Flame Mountain, mastering the Samadhi Fire, and later wreaked havoc around Drill Head Mountain, often bullying the local land gods. When Tang Seng and his disciples passed by Drill Head Mountain, Red Boy transformed into a seven-year-old child, tying himself up and hanging from a pine tree to call for help. This act stirred Tang Seng’s compassion and also ignited conflict between Tang Seng and Sun Wukong. Red Boy then managed to kidnap Tang Seng. When Sun Wukong came to rescue Tang Seng, Red Boy repeatedly outwitted him, and his Samadhi Fire almost led to Sun Wukong’s demise. In the end, Sun Wukong called upon Bodhisattva Guanyin, who used Marshal Li Jing’s Heavenly Halberd transformed into a lotus pedestal and Tathagata Buddha’s Golden Hoop to subdue Red Boy.

Guanyin, recognizing Red Boy’s wild and untamable nature, made him prostrate himself with every step all the way to Mount Luojia, where he became the Shancai Child.
