The six brothers of Mount Mei are characters from the classic Chinese mythological novel “Journey to the West.”
In “Journey to the West,” the six brothers serve as aides to Erlang Shen, the True Sovereign, comprising Kang Anyu, Zhang Boshi, Li Huanzhang, Yao Gonglin, Guo Shen, and Zhi Jian. Together with Erlang Shen, whose mortal name is Yang Jian, they are also known as the Seven Saints of Mount Mei.
Originally, they were a group known as the Seven Saints of Mount Mei in Yuan dynasty drama, referred to as the Seven Saints of Mei Mountain, serving under Erlang Shen. In “Journey to the West,” the group was modified to the Six Saints of Mount Mei, incorporating Erlang Shen into the group, thus forming the “Seven Saints” after forming a bond of sworn brotherhood.
In “Journey to the West,” the Six Saints of Mount Mei and Erlang Shen are collectively called the “Seven Saints of Mount Mei.” This group should not be confused with the “Seven Monsters of Mount Mei” from “The Investiture of the Gods,” which is a reinterpretation by the author of “The Investiture of the Gods” based on the Six Saints from “Journey to the West.” These seven monsters participated with Yang Jian in the early Zhou dynasty’s military campaigns led by King Wu against King Zhou.
Kang Anyu, the eldest of the Six Saints, has a noticeable lump on his head and wields a crescent shovel. He has a calm demeanor and secretly aids Chen Xiang in rescuing his mother.
Zhang Boshi, the second eldest, is fierce and single-minded, very tall and robust, roughly the same height as the third brother, Li Huanzhang.
Li Huanzhang, the third brother, is notably ugly, with his hair sticking up on both sides, dressed in a long robe striped red and yellow, and is tall and thin.
Yao Gonglin, the fourth brother, is cunning, bald, wears a conical hat, and is clad in a brown short coat. He is known for his intelligence and is about the same height as the fifth brother, Guo Shen.
Guo Shen, the fifth brother, has a ring of hair on his otherwise bald head, wears a red long robe covered by a short coat with a gold pattern, and is about the same height as the fourth brother, Yao Gonglin.
Zhi Jian, the youngest, is cheerful and straightforward, highly values loyalty, has his hair parted down the middle, adorned with hair accessories and numerous small braids, wears a black mink robe, a grey linen undergarment or a goose-yellow brocade undergarment, and black boots, wielding a long spear.
In “The Investiture of the Gods,” the subdued Seven Saints of Mount Mei are Yuan Hong (the White Gibbon Demon), Wu Long (the Centipede Demon), Chang Hao (the Long Snake Demon), Zhu Zizhen (the Pig Demon), Yang Xian (the Sheep Demon), Dai Li (the Dog Demon), and Jin Dasheng (the Ox Demon).
