Enlightenment is a Buddhist concept that refers to the state a practitioner achieves after long-term cultivation and practice, ultimately reaching the true path of enlightenment. In Buddhism, the ultimate goal of practice is to escape the cycle of life and death—Samsara—and attain the state of Nirvana. Enlightenment typically signifies that a person has reached a complete level of accomplishment on the path of practice and has been validated by the true Dharma. Therefore, in Buddhism, Enlightenment refers to having an epiphany in practice, known as Attaining Enlightenment. This represents the highest goal of Buddhist practice, usually implying reaching the state of Nirvana or becoming a Buddha, achieving great freedom and liberation.
During the process of cultivation, practitioners need to adhere to the disciplines of precepts, meditation, and wisdom, gradually eliminating afflictions, purifying the mind, and ultimately attaining Enlightenment. The meaning and expression of Enlightenment can vary across different Buddhist traditions; for example, in Theravada Buddhism, Arahatship is a form of Enlightenment, while in Mahayana Buddhism, becoming a Buddha is the ultimate form of Enlightenment.
This concept is not limited to Buddhism alone; in Taoism and other religious or philosophical systems, similar concepts exist, typically referring to reaching an ideal state or result through cultivation or practice. The term Enlightenment is commonly used among Buddhist and Taoist practitioners, where having an epiphany in practice is called Attaining Enlightenment. Successful practice results in Enlightenment, which is distinct from the misguided outcomes of heterodox paths, thus the term Enlightenment. In short, the result certified by righteous practitioners is called Enlightenment, whereas the result obtained by practitioners of heterodox paths is known as Heterodox fruit.
Enlightenment can also metaphorically refer to a good, proper destination, indicating a clear understanding of something, or even suggesting that one has reached the highest level of insight into it.
