Shigandang, also known as Mount Tai Shigandang, is a traditional folklore from Tai’an City, Shandong Province and one of the national Intangible Cultural Heritages. Positioned in streets and alleys, especially at T-junctions and other locations considered to have negative Feng Shui impacts, these stone tablets are used to ward off evil spirits. Mount Tai Shigandang comes in various styles; some feature bas-relief carvings of lion or tiger heads on their tablets, while others are unadorned, merely engraved with “Shigandang” or “Mount Tai Shigandang” and painted with cinnabar red. Originally intended to suppress misfortune and ward off evil, their functions have evolved to include dispelling wind, preventing water damage, protecting against evil, stopping malevolent forces, and eliminating disasters. In many places, Shigandang are revered as protective deities of roads.
Mount Tai Shigandang reflects an ancient tradition of venerating sacred stones, primarily manifested by small stone tablets (or figurines) placed at crucial points along bridges or built into the walls of houses, engraved or inscribed with “Shigandang” or “Mount Tai Shigandang” to ward off inauspicious forces. The custom of Shigandang is widespread, centered in the Mount Tai area of Shandong and gradually spreading throughout China (including Taiwan Province and ethnic minority regions) and to East Asian countries such as Japan and Korea, as well as Southeast Asia and overseas Chinese communities around the world.
This folk custom is highly popular among the people, symbolizing the expression of intangible beliefs through tangible objects. It helps individuals cope with various real and imagined dangers and psychological pressures brought by mythical monsters and ghosts, overcoming inexplicable confusion and fear. Over time, it has shed its superstitious overtones, embodying the people’s aspirations for peace, harmony, and good fortune.
