Mount Tai, one of the Five Great Mountains of China, is celebrated as the “foremost of the Five Great Mountains,” “uniquely revered among the Five Great Mountains,” and “the premier mountain under heaven.” It is referred to by scholars both in China and abroad as “China’s Mount Olympus.” Located in the central part of Shandong Province and under the jurisdiction of Tai’an City, it stretches across Tai’an, Jinan, and Zibo cities, covering a total area of 25,000 hectares, with its highest peak, Jade Emperor Peak, reaching approximately 1545 meters in elevation.
Mount Tai is intertwined with over five thousand years of Chinese civilization, embodying the history of national prosperity and the survival of the ethnic group. It is not only a significant sacred site for Taoism and Buddhism but also regarded as a divine mountain with direct access to the imperial throne, encapsulated by the saying, “When Mount Tai is stable, all lands are peaceful.”
The east, symbolizing the source of life, hope, and good fortune, was venerated by ancient Chinese ancestors who often considered majestic and peculiar mountains in the east as abodes of Immortals, worshipping the mountain spirits to pray for favorable weather and good harvests. Thus, located in the east, Mount Tai became known as the “mountain of good fortune” and “residence of the Immortals,” where life is nurtured. The “Son of Heaven,” a title for emperors bestowed by divine mandate, viewed Mount Tai as a symbol of national unity and power. To express gratitude for the “mandate” bestowed by the Heavenly Emperor, it was imperative to perform deity enthronement and sacrificial rituals at Mount Tai. From Qin Shi Huang to the Qing dynasty, a total of 13 generations of emperors personally ascended Mount Tai for the Tai Shan Feng Shan ritual or sacrifices, and another 24 generations sent officials to conduct 72 sacrificial ceremonies.
