Rakshasi is an important character in the classic Chinese novel “Journey to the West.” She is the wife of the Bull Demon King and the mother of Red Boy, residing near the Flaming Mountains in the Banana Fan Cave on Green Cloud Mountain. Her name derives from her magical implement, the Banana Fan.
Rakshasi is allied with the Yaoguai as the wife of the Bull Demon King. She forms a family unit with her husband and their son, Red Boy, living in the Banana Fan Cave located near the Flaming Mountains.
Rakshasi is known for her strong, decisive character and also displays the tenderness of a wife and mother. In the novel, she harbors great hostility towards Sun Wukong, who had previously had conflicts with the Bull Demon King. She possesses the Banana Fan, capable of extinguishing the fierce fires of the Flaming Mountains. The Banana Fan is a powerful magical implement.
In “Journey to the West,” as Sun Wukong and his disciples journey to the Western Heavens to retrieve sacred texts, they encounter an impassable barrier at the Flaming Mountains. To extinguish the flames, Sun Wukong visits Rakshasi to borrow the Banana Fan. Initially, due to her resentment towards Sun Wukong stemming from her relationship with the Bull Demon King, Rakshasi refuses to lend the fan. Sun Wukong tricks her by transforming into a small insect and entering her stomach, forcing her to hand over the Banana Fan. Rakshasi gives him a fake fan which only intensifies the flames. Sun Wukong is compelled to confront her again for the real fan. After a series of clever battles, with the assistance of Guanyin Bodhisattva, Sun Wukong finally obtains the real Banana Fan and successfully extinguishes the fire of the Flaming Mountains.
Rakshasi is a captivating female character in “Journey to the West,” reflecting ancient Chinese society’s understanding of women’s multiple identities—both as a member of the family and as an individual with independent will and abilities. Rakshasi’s portrayal has been adapted and interpreted in many subsequent films, literary works, and other cultural expressions, making her one of the classic cultural symbols.
