As the son of the Bull Demon King and Rakshasi, both prominent figures in the realm of yaoguai, the Boy Sage King inherited powerful magical abilities from a young age. Due to his parents’ prominent status and his own strength, Red Boy was revered as the “Boy Sage King.”
The Boy Sage King’s most famous ability is his Samadhi True Fire. This flame is so powerful that ordinary water cannot extinguish it; only the Banana Fan or the magical power of Guanyin Bodhisattva can put it out. Despite his young age, Red Boy is clever and adept at using strategies. In his confrontations with Sun Wukong, he demonstrated high intelligence and tactical acumen. He has a fierce personality and enjoys combat, displaying extraordinary fighting skills, especially in battles against Sun Wukong.
In “Journey to the West,” Red Boy terrorizes the area around the Flaming Mountains as a yaoguai, coveting the immortality that Tang Seng’s flesh would bring, and sets a trap to capture Tang Seng with the intent to eat him. Sun Wukong and others repeatedly try to rescue Tang Seng, but they are thwarted by Red Boy’s Samadhi True Fire and clever wit. Ultimately, at the request of Sun Wukong, Guanyin Bodhisattva personally intervenes, subdues Red Boy, and takes him as her disciple under the name Shancai Child.
