Mass communication refers to the large-scale information production and dissemination activities targeting the general public through specialized media organizations utilizing advanced communication technologies and industrialized means. This mode of communication transmits information to a broad audience through mass media channels such as newspapers, radio, television, and the internet.

Mass communication emerged after the development of printing, optics, and electronics technologies to a certain level. With technological advancement, mass communication gradually exhibits new characteristics such as diversified communicators, digital and fragmented content, platformization of media channels, media convergence, and audience segmentation.
