“Contrarian troll” is a popular internet slang referring to individuals who derive pleasure from persistent arguing or always taking a contrary stance. The term originated from a Chinese comic. In April 2018, a comic mocking “contrarian trolls” was posted online. In the comic, a girl confesses her feelings to a “contrarian troll” and asks to meet his mother. The troll responds, “That’s the only thing I can’t do because ‘contrarian trolls’ don’t deserve to have mothers.” This comic helped popularize the term.

Contrarian trolls often disregard whether others’ statements are correct, typically ignoring or misconstruing the original logic. They rebut specifically to oppose, irrespective of the facts, aiming solely to provoke others through targeted contradictions to achieve their ends. When contrarian trolls strike, they exploit human emotional weaknesses and logical flaws, often leaving others speechless and successfully infuriating them.

The term “contrarian troll” emphasizes the act of being contrarian, carrying a tone of mockery and sarcasm, usually with a distinctly pejorative connotation. These individuals do not seek the truth; regardless of what others say, their first instinct is to find faults and oppose for the sake of opposition and argument. Their natural response is to attack and vehemently counter any opposing views, elevating themselves by belittling others relentlessly. Essentially, they engage in a near-obstinate behavior, targeting others’ vulnerabilities for their amusement.
