Yellow Wind Sage is a character from the classic novel “Journey to the West.” Originally a yellow-furred marten that achieved enlightenment at the foot of Mount Ling, he fled after stealing the clear oil from a glazed lamp, fearing capture and punishment by Vajra.

The Buddha gave Bodhisattva Lingji a Wind-Calming Pill and the Flying Dragon Staff. At that time, Bodhisattva Lingji, holding these gifts, appeared before the Buddha. The Buddha spared the life of the Yellow Wind Sage and allowed him to return to the mountains in obscurity, entrusting Bodhisattva Lingji with this task.

Armed with a trident, the Yellow Wind Monster was a formidable fighter with vast supernatural powers and boundless magical strength. His breath could unleash a yellow wind that was invincible, wreaking havoc across the Three Realms.

In “Journey to the West,” the Yellow Wind Monster’s subordinate, Tiger Vanguard, tricked Tang Seng into their lair. Later, Sun Wukong and Zhu Bajie arrived at the cave demanding his release. The Yellow Wind Monster, wielding his trident, engaged in battle with them. The fight between him and Sun Wukong on Yellow Wind Ridge lasted over thirty rounds without a clear victor. Sun Wukong used his ability to create duplicates of himself, which the Yellow Wind Monster, frightened, dispersed with a powerful gust, spinning Wukong’s duplicates in the air like spinning wheels, causing his fiery eyes intense pain.

Wukong and Bajie sought refuge at the home of a farmer, transformed by the Dharma Protector Kalan, where they bought medicine for eye pain. The old man remarked, “The wind of this Yellow Wind Sage is the most formidable, called the Samadhi Divine Wind!” Overhearing this, Wukong learned that the monster feared only Bodhisattva Lingji, but did not know where to find him. They then met another old man, who turned out to be Taibai Jinxing in disguise, who informed them of Bodhisattva Lingji’s residence. Wukong fetched Bodhisattva Lingji from Mount Sumeru, and only with the Flying Dragon Staff was he able to subdue the Yellow Wind Monster, revealing his true form as a yellow-furred marten and rescuing Tang Seng.
