Zen(禅):
In Chinese, it is pronounced as: chán,Written as:

Zen is a practice based on “stillness,” originating from human instincts and developed by ancient ancestors into various systems of practice, appearing across different schools of thought. “Zen” is an abbreviation of the Buddhist term “dhyana,” a transliteration from Sanskrit. It is also translated as “abandoning evil” or “jungle of merits and virtues.” In meaning, it translates to “contemplative cultivation” or “calm reflection.” It is a method of practice in Buddhism, with distinctions between Patriarch Zen and Buddha Zen.
The term “contemplative cultivation” is named after its cause, signifying focused thinking and cultivation as the cause to achieve a settled mind, hence it’s called contemplative cultivation. The term “calm reflection” is named after its essence, where the essence of dhyana is tranquil with the function of profound reflection, thus called calm reflection. Calmness refers to concentration, and reflection refers to wisdom. The wondrous essence of equal concentration and wisdom is called “dhyana,” commonly referred to in Buddhism as participating in Zen. It involves serene spirituality, discarding external affiliations (external matters), not being influenced by them, and drawing the spirit inward to self-reflect (not the physical body), which is “Zen.”
The troubles in life are self-created. When the mind becomes vast and clear, like a cup emptied of worries, it can achieve tranquility and peace. If a person’s mind can be like a lotus, indifferent and detached, without discrimination, attachment, love, hate, gain, or loss, they can attain happiness and harmony. Water flows to lower places, clouds drift in the sky, and everything happens naturally and harmoniously—this is the ordinary mind. Possessing an ordinary mind, life is like flowing clouds and water, returning to one’s true nature; this is understanding life, this is Zen. A peaceful mind, pure and simple, returning to one’s true nature; this is understanding life, this is Zen.
