Paradise, also known as the Pure Land of Amitabha, is a concept in Buddhism, closely associated with Amitabha and Pure Land Buddhism. It is also referred to as the Ultimate Bliss Pure Land, Land of Paradise, Western Pure Land, the West, or the Land of Bliss. Located far beyond a trillion Buddha-realms to the west of our world, it is the Ultimate Bliss Pure Land.
The concept of Paradise mainly stems from The Amitāyus Sutra, The Visualization of the Amitāyus Sutra, and The Amitabha Sutra. These scriptures recount that Amitabha, eons ago, made forty-eight vows to create a land free of suffering, aiming to welcome all beings who have faith and chant his name.
Described as a realm filled with joy and peace, devoid of pain, worries, and sins, its environment is exquisitely beautiful, adorned with golden grounds, the Pool of Seven Treasures, Water of Eight Virtues, and wonderful flora and fauna. All beings in this realm can practice effortlessly and ultimately achieve Buddhahood.
The principal practice to enter Paradise is chanting the name of Amitabha, specifically the mantra “Namo Amitabha Buddha.” Pure Land Buddhism teaches that by sincerely chanting Amitabha’s name and aspiring to be reborn in Paradise, one will be guided there by Amitabha at life’s end.
Paradise is not only a physical Pure Land but also symbolizes the purification and liberation of the mind. It represents the Buddhist aspiration for an ideal world and the pursuit of ultimate liberation.
In East Asian Buddhism, particularly in China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam, the belief in the Pure Land is immensely popular. Many devotees chant daily, hoping to be reborn in Paradise after death.
