The Cave of Fire Cloud is a location in “Journey to the West,” serving as the residence of Red Boy, the Holy Infant King, situated at the desolate Kusong Gully of Mount Jilei. Located on Mount Jilei, the cave represents a mysterious and hazardous locale. According to the descriptions in the book, the cave’s surroundings are hostile, perennially enveloped in flames and thick smoke. As one of the iconic settings in “Journey to the West,” the Cave of Fire Cloud is not only widely popular in literature but has also been adapted numerous times into films and animations, becoming a well-known plot element.
Additionally, the Cave of Fire Cloud features in other literary works. For instance, in the Ming Dynasty novel “The Investiture of the Gods,” it is the abode where the three sovereigns, Fuxi, Shennong, and Xuanyuan, resided after achieving enlightenment. This mystical place is revered as the dwelling of the Three Sovereigns of heaven, earth, and humanity—Fuxi, Shennong (Yan Emperor), and Xuanyuan (Yellow Emperor). These sovereigns hold an extremely significant position in ancient Chinese mythology, representing the three realms of heaven, earth, and humanity respectively, and are considered the forefathers and protectors of Chinese civilization. Thus, as their residence, the Cave of Fire Cloud is endowed with a high degree of mystical allure and sacred status.
