Great Sage National Preceptor Wang Bodhisattva is a character from the classic Chinese mythological novel “Journey to the West”. He possesses vast supernatural powers and once subdued Lady Watermother, serving as the master to Prince Xiao Zhang. When Sun Wukong sought his help, the Great Sage, having recently taken on the Great Sage of Water Apes as a disciple, found it inconvenient to go in person and instead sent Prince Xiao Zhang and the Four Divine Generals to subdue the guai.
In the Southern Sanbu Continent at Xuyi Mountain in Pin City, Great Sage National Preceptor Wang Bodhisattva commands his disciple Prince Xiao Zhang and the Four Divine Generals. In the past, he had subdued Lady Watermother. During a time when Sun Wukong was at a loss with the Yellow Brow Guai, he asked for the National Preceptor’s assistance. However, since the Great Sage had just taken the Great Sage of Water Apes as a disciple, he could not go personally and only sent Prince Xiao Zhang and the Four Divine Generals to handle the guai. Later, Prince Xiao Zhang and the Four Divine Generals were captured by the Yellow Brow Guai using the Species Bag, but Maitreya arrived in time. Together with Wukong, they devised a plan to capture the Yellow Brow Guai and rescue the captured Divine Generals.
The historical figure behind this character is the Tang dynasty monk Sengqie, who reportedly hailed from an unknown country and thus took “He” as his surname. He was also known as the “Great Sage of Wolf Mountain” and the “Great Sage of Sizhou”. He was the founding patriarch of the Guangjiao Temple on Wolf Mountain in Jiangsu, Tongzhou, and was said to be an incarnation of Guanyin. Emperor Zhongzong of Tang appointed him as the national preceptor, and he was revered in later generations as “Great Sage Bodhisattva”. Wu Cheng’en, hailing from Huai’an, was quite familiar with Sengqie’s deeds and incorporated the story of Great Sage National Preceptor Wang Bodhisattva into his creation of “Journey to the West”.
