Divination refers to a folk method of predicting fate. It originally referred to the process of interpreting hexagrams recorded in the I Ching, aided by tools such as oracle bones, coins, or milfoil stalks, to deduce calculations. It is used to foretell blessings and misfortunes. The term later broadened to encompass various forms of divination, such as face reading, bone-touching, and Four Pillars or Six Pillars Feng Shui predictions.
The history of divination can be traced back to ancient times. Fu Xi is credited as the inventor of hexagram divination; he created the Eight-Trigram diagram, which is the origin of hexagram divination. Divination holds a long history and a rich cultural foundation within Chinese culture. It is not only a method for predicting the future but also reflects the ancient Chinese philosophical thought and understanding of natural laws.
There are various methods of divination, including Six Ren, Plum Blossom Divination, and Qimen Dunjia. Each of these methods has its own characteristics, but they all share the common feature of using hexagrams to predict the auspiciousness or inauspiciousness of events.
